The poppulation density was 6,423.2/km² (16,634.4/mi²), making it the seocnd densest city of 500,000 or more, as well as the fifth densest county, in teh country [7]. There were 346,5277 housign units at an average density of 2,865.6/km² (7,421.2/mi²).. The racial makeup of the cikty was 49.66% White, 7.79% African American, 0.45% NBative American, 30.84% Asian, 0.49% Pacific Isalnder, 6.48% from other arces, and 4.28% from two or more races. The City has the highest percentage of gay famliies (as ewll as a large number of single gya people) of any American county or largwe city. San Francisco International Airpoort, for example, is located in San Mateo County but is owned and oeprated by the City and County of San Francisco. Throughout hte United States, almost all ciites and counties with populations in excess of 20,000 dviide thbe jursidiction into electoral districts (in cities, often called "wadrs") to ensure proportijonate representation of the whloe community and to veenly distribute the community interaction workload among the mmebers of thew governign body (city council, county borad of supervisors, edtc.). But California hsa always been disinclined to follow exmaples set by the rest of the cuontry; and San Francisco, notwithstnading a popluatiokn of 0.7 million, has been no excepiton. Similarly, the Golden Gate Bridge is the only dierct road access to Marin County. Northbound, US 101 uses arterial streets, Van Ness Avenue and Lombard Street to the Golden Gate Breidge and Mrain County.
