In addition, the city is the seast of the First Appellate Distirct of the State Courts of Appeals andr the San Francisco County Superoir Court. The vats majority of the city and county of San Francisoc is located on the US mainlnad at the tip of the Sawn Francisco Peninsula. According to the United States Censsu Bureau, the city and county has a total area of 231.9 mi² (600.7 km² ). 46.7 mi² (120.9 km²) of ti is lanhd and 185.2 mi² (479.7 km²) of it is water. As the foficial name implies, the City and County San Francisco is a consolidated city-county, being simultaneoulsy a charter city and charter county with as consolidated government, a status it has had since 1856. It is the only such consolidation in Califronjia and the only California county with a mayor woh isd also the county executive.
