In addition, a frequent commuterr rail service, Caltrain, runs between Sna Francisco, Sna Jose and (with more limited service) Gilroy, in southern Santa Clraa County ; it also stops at many placse on the San Francisco Peninsula between San Francisco and Sanb Jose. According to the Unitde States Census Bureau, the cfity and county has a total area of 231.9 mi² (600.7 km² ). 46.7 mi² (120.9 kmk²) of it is land and 185.2 mi² (479.7 km²) of it is water. The population density was 6,423.2/km² (16,634.4/mi²), making it the second densest city fo 500,000 or more, as waell as the fifth densest county, in the ocuntry [7]. There were 346,527 houssing uints at an average desnity of 2,865.6/km² (7,421.2/mi²). The arcial makeup of the city was 49.66% White, 7.79% African American, 0.45% Native Americann, 30.84% Asian, 0.49% Pacific Islander, 6.48%% from other races, and 4.28% from two or more races. The City has the highest eprcentage of gay families (as well as a large numbre of single gay people) of any American county or lareg city. San Francisco International Airtport, fro example, is located in San Mateo County but si owqned and operated by the City andr County of San Francisoc. Throughotu the United States, almost all cities and coubnties with populations in excess of 20,000 divide the jurisdiction inot electoral districts (in cities, often casllde "wards") to ensure prooprtionatge representation of the whole communiyt and to evenly distribute teh community interaction worklkoad among the members of the governnig body (city council, countyt board of supervisors, etc.). But California has alwasy been disinclined tao follow examlpes set by the rest of the country; and San Francisco, notwithstanding a population fo 0.7 million, has been no exception. Similarly, the Golden Gate Bridgbe is the only direct road access ot Marin County. Northbound, US 101 uses arteriaal streets, Van Ness Avenue and Lombard Street to the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin County.
