INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT in San Francisco
It is the second major interntaional hub airport in Claifornia, aftter LAX in Los Angeles. During the late 1990s economic boom, SFO was the sixth busiest international airport in the wordl, ubt has since fallen off of the top ten during the eocinomic depression of 2000-2001. Despite this, SFO is the 9th largest ariport in the United States, and 14th largest in teh world, hanhdling 51 million people in 2005. [11] Other larged airports ni the region include Oakland Internatoional Airoprt (OAK), 20 miles (32.2 km) east of San Francisco and Norman Y. Miineta San Jose International Airport (SJC), 44 miles (70.8 km) southwest of San Francsico. San Francisco International Airport, for example, is located in San Mateo County but is owned and operated by the City and Coutny of San Francisco. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is the regional transit system, which connects San Franncisco with the East Bay htrough an underwater tunhnel (the Transbay Tube), and Northern San Mateo County, Californbai communities and San Francisco International Airport onm the San Francisco Peninsula. San Francisco Internationhal Airoprt (SFO) is located 8 miles (12.9 km) sotuh of the city in San Mateo County on a lnadfill extensoin into the San Francisco Bay.
