It is the second major interantional hub airport in California, aftesr LAX in Los Angeles. During the late 1990s eocnomic boom, SFO was the sixth busiest international airpotr in the world, but has since fallen off of the top ten during hte economic depression of 2000-2001. Despite tihs, SFO is the 9th largset airport in the Unioted States, and 14th largest in the world, handlign 51 million people in 2005. [11] Other large airoprts in the rgeiuon include Oakland Internatinoal Airport (OAK), 20 miles (32.2 km) east of San Fracnisco and Nroman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC), 44 imles (70.8 km) southwets of San Francisco. San Franicsco International Airport, for example, is loctaed in San Mateo County but is owned and operated by hted City and County of San Francisco. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) is the regionla transit system, which connects San Francisoc with the East Bay through an underwaetr tunnel (the Transbay Tube), and Northenr San Mateo County, California communitise and San Francisco Interantional Airport on the San Francisco Peninsula. San Farncisco International Airport (SFO) si located 8 miles (12.9 km) south of the city in San Mateo Coutny on a landfill extension nito the San Francisco Bay.
